Rachel Barton plays a Yann Besson violin made in 2006.
Rachel Barton Violinist Rachel Barton (BMus, MMus, PGdip) is a graduate of the University of Sheffield and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where she was fortunate enough to study intensively with the world renowned musician Dr. Christopher Rowland in the final years of his life.
Rachel has worked extensively with a number of professional orchestras in and around the Manchester region, including :
In 2007 she moved to the UAE where she is Principle Second Violin of the UAE National Symphony Orchestra.
She is also leader of the Emirates Ensemble, with whom she has performed to numerous visiting dignitaries including HRH the Queen of England. In addition, she has performed live on TV, and played with Harry Connick Jr when he visited the Middle East.
She is also a full-time violin teacher in Abu Dhabi’s prestigious British School Al Khubairat.

I bought my violin in 2006 when Yann Besson visited Manchester for a violin fair. I tried hundreds of potential instruments, looking for one that produced a warm, sonorous tone without sounding muted, and good clarity and volume without being too bright. I found all this and more in Yann’s violin. It had the perfect combination of richness in the lower strings and sweetness in the higher notes, and it somehow avoided the harsh colours of so many new instruments. Response is immediate, and the clarity is excellent. It has gone from strength to strength in the first few years as the tone has developed further, and I am really delighted with my choice!
I am also delighted with the after-care service Yann has provided. Unlike so many luthiers, he goes to considerable lengths to ensure he does not loose contact with his instruments, with many a friendly email to check everything is OK. What’s more, he urges his clients to pop by every year or two so he can check the set-up. At our last meeting he cleaned the varnish and adjusted the bridge and sound-post, discussing the sound options as he went to ensure the changes were exactly to my liking. This is really exceptional after-care service for an exceptional instrument, and I couldn’t be happier to have chosen a violin by Yann Besson!”
